Why Leisure?

These courses are designed to help you get the most out of the great books. They’re not for college students who have to rush through the great books just to make the grade. They’re designed to enrich your life through contact with the world’s greatest minds, with just the right amount of help to make them more accessible. True leisure enriches your life. It is not entertainment but re-creation.

What if I miss a discussion?

All of the discussions will be recorded and made available so you can watch any session that you miss.

Do I need to prepare for class ahead of time?

We don’t ask or expect you to read ahead or do any other preparation because we don’t want you to feel any pressure, or be able to get behind. Everything you need for the understanding of the material in question will be brought out in the course of each day’s discussion.

How is Leisure Learning different from other great books programs?

Leisure Learning differs from other great books programs in very important ways. First, you get a lot more time with the mentors. Instead of meeting once a week, we will meet for an hour each day, Monday-Thursday. This has many benefits, among which are the following: you never have to worry about homework or getting behind, so the course is stress free; and you won’t get frustrated trying to work through a difficult text on your own.

Secondly, we spend more time on the books themselves. We move through them at a slower pace so that we can look at the literary, philosophical, and personally applicable aspects of the text and get the most out of them possible.

Thirdly, our classes are smaller than most other great books classes. We want to help you learn to think about great books and in our opinion this requires a small class.
